It was a lovely show this year, and the hall looked fabulous as ever with the golden daffodils and all the tasty food. It is obvious that there are a lot of talented people in Payhembury when you walk around admiring the exhibits. Unfortunately there were fewer entries than last year and less people in attendance. This could be due to a number of contributory factors, such as the fact that it was Mothering Sunday the following day and people were away, there was a craft fair in Broadhembury at the same time and one of the reasons was definitely …

Alan’s Nature Notes from March
Hello again
I think Spring has sprung! Today is the 18th of March and it’s a lovely day. The 1st of March was also lovely with the daffodils in bloom and the primroses appearing in the lanes. There were bees on the cyclamen and crocuses in our garden. Returning home at about ten o'clock one evening, there were two deer in the road just this side of Luton, so we must drive with great care.
There were still some fieldfares about on the 5th of March but I think they will all have gone home to Norway now. On good days, there are more buzzards …

Yellingham Farm Diary – Notes from March
It’s nearly the end of March and we started lambing at the beginning of the month but it has been so slow. I have never known a year like it. We are not even halfway through after three weeks. I need to have a word with the rams!
The lambs we have had have been superb so even if the rams were slow, they have produced some excellent stock. So far we have had four sets of triplets (which do not excite me, or the ewe, as a ewe has only two teats), two singles and the rest are twins. With the good weather we have been able to turn ewes and lambs …

Your Local Shop Buys Milk Locally
You may have seen the recent BBC Countryfile programme describing the plight of the UK’s dairy farmers.
Payhembury Provisions is pleased to reassure its customers that unlike some wholesalers and supermarkets who drive prices down, the shop pays a fair price direct to the dairy itself. All the milk the shop sells comes from the Gundenham Dairy in Somerset. This family farm has been producing milk for over 80 years and is proud to be one of the most successful independent retailers in the South West, supplying outlets within a 70 mile radius of …

Payhembury Past – April
This month a few views of the village green which seems to have changed very little over the years although it looks as though the state of the roads may always have been something of an issue!
Thank you to Betty Johns who got in touch to tell us that her late husband Edwin is the farmer with the two horses in the photo we published last month.
Many thanks again to Brian Salter for sending the photos to us. We’ll continue to share a few each issue. …

Churchmouse – April
Dear Friends
Just look at this picture. Parchina caught me when I was tucking into a nice little egg. I thought no one was around, so I settled down to eat it all on my own which I knew was a bit greedy but I didn’t care at that moment (I know that’s naughty). Well, I was tucking in, getting my whiskers covered in chocolate, when along came Parchina. “What are you doing,“ she squeaked. “Nothing,” I spluttered through the chocolate in my mouth. “Well, you could have shared that egg, couldn’t you?” Parchina commented, looking rather hurt.

Alan’s Nature Notes from February
Hello everyone
It's a lovely morning today, so I went for a walk up the lane. Passing by Cokesputt, I stopped to look in the field on the right. There, in the field, by the hedge, was a green woodpecker. I must have disturbed it, because it flew up into the trees, showing the lovely yellow flash of its rump as it went. A splendid bird! On my way back home, about half an hour later, there it was again — probably looking for ants, its main food. Incidentally, I saw three deer in the same field the other week, at 3.30 in the afternoon!
A …

Payhembury Past
Brian Salter has been kind enough to pass us some photos of Payhembury through the ages. We’ll be sharing a couple each issue. Do let us know if you recognise anyone!
Thank you to Douglas and Vera Daymond, who wrote to tell us the identity of some of the children in the photos we published last month:
‘The King was Anthony Daymond; the Queen was Jean Holden; the Princess was Jacqueline Daymond and the Prince was Kevin Murch. The person who crowned them was our local MP, Mr Peter Emery. The photo was taken about 1968 at the village Mayfair.’ …
