BBC Radio 4 programme Open Country is to broadcast an episode focusing on aspects of the Tale Valley. In addition to items on Hembury Fort and the Tale Valley Trust, there are interviews with people associated with the Tale Valley Community Theatre (TVCT) and the eyewitnesses who contributed to the research on the 1941 crash of a Junkers 88 German bomber in the Valley.
This incident was the focus of Foresight, a 2007 play by Rose Watts, performed by TVCT in a marquee at Tuckmill. The play sold out and the audience exited the marquee near the …

Churchmouse – December
Dear Friends
We had a shock in church this month, a pool appeared and was filled with water. What, we wondered, was this for? Was it some new way of spring cleaning? Well, we waited to see what was happening and what a surprise, there was a Christening service, nothing unusual about that, but during this baptism, Abigail and Anna went right under the water. That certainly was a bit different from babies being held over the font!
We heard Abigail and Anna making their promises to follow the teachings of Jesus and everyone sang happy songs. We …

Appeal from Payhembury Youth Club
Payhembury Youth Club
It is with regret that I report the youth club is experiencing difficult times. We have been running the junior section by relying on the considerable efforts of Jenny Ireland, who is working way beyond what she originally agreed to, and Robin Elsom who is running the senior section as the only volunteer.
As the situation stands we require more people to come forward to help at sessions and to give up some of their time to be on the committee. If this doesn't happen we will have no option but to close the doors …

Alan’s Nature Notes from Bulgaria
I recently spent a week in Bulgaria, looking for those birds which are rare, and which don’t often come to East Devon! Bulgaria is a small country, but it boasts many different habitats, including mountains, rivers, steppe, woodland, lakes, estuaries and the Black sea coast, which is one of the best migration routes in Spring and Autumn. The Black Sea coastline is also a tourist area, and so is the most populated. In the mountain areas the villages are poor, as most of the young people have moved to the cities for work. We were very lucky with …

Churchmouse – November
Hi Everyone
We mice had a bit of a shock at the beginning of the month. We were looking forward to Harvest Festival as I wrote ast time but what a surprise we had with school’s Harvest Festival.
At first a few children arrived and hid behind our screen, “Oh,” we thought, “that’s funny; the children usually sit in rows.” Then someone came in and gave them something that really surprised us - mice masks, and they started to squeak just like us! Then the service started and the children told the story of Parchie and Parchina mice and family and …

They Dream of Home
In a car-free village centre and on a battlefield-disguised school playing field, an inspired cast gave memorable performances in Tale Valley Community Theatre’s challenging and emotive outdoor autumn production of “They Dream of Home”, directed and written by John Somers, reflecting the lives of two young soldiers, killed during WW1, whose names are on Payhembury memorial. After reading the script, their relatives had given permission for use of the young men’s names in the play.
The young actors who played the central characters - soldiers, …
