Non Urgent Crime? Report it Online
Yellingham Farm Diary – June
I rang the shearer and asked him to give me a date when he could come and shear. As usual, I got a swift reply and an even swifter date. “How about tomorrow afternoon?”
There is no way you can say no as you never know when you might see them again and given the forecast looked good as well, I said yes immediately and then worried about cancelling my planned activities for the next day.
We got the sheep in early, as there was a dampness in the air and you can’t shear wet sheep. It was a noisy affair as the ewes have still got their lambs at …

Alan’s Nature Notes from June
Not very summery, is it? Very wet and miserable!
The wet weather has badly affected the butterflies that we should be seeing in big numbers in the middle of June. However, there are some about — the other day, I saw two painted ladies, two orange tips, and two speckled woods up the lane. We visited Ashclyst Forest, and saw a few small pearl bordered fritillaries and a couple of broad bodied chaser dragonflies. There were plenty of wild orchids in bloom there, and we heard the lovely song of the willow warbler.
This is the month for the new …

Churchmouse – July
Dear Friends,
What fun we have been having. We just loved the Queen’s birthday weekend. We mice had a great party, shame about the weather, but we all dressed up. We made robes from small pieces of material we found lying around; no we didn’t bite bits off Rev Cate’s robes. Mum was busy for days sewing tiny pieces together to make a long cloak for Parchina and we found some tin foil and made crowns. Everyone dressed up, our mice cousins came in from the field and we had a mouse street party behind the church. We had hoped that if the children …

Payhembury Provisions’ 5th Birthday Party
Like any other five year old we are very excited to be celebrating our birthday this month. There has been such a lot for us all to learn over the last five years and we know there will be more challenges to come. Babies that were just born when we started are now at school, teenagers who volunteered with us have been through university and some have embarked on careers in retail. We have celebrated birthdays and anniversaries and commiserated over illnesses and troubles. We're happy to say we have been able to help many village organisations …

Yellingham Farm Diary – May
Lambing seems light years away and the lambs are growing on strongly and look wonderful. After a few weeks of calm, the sheep now become fairly labour intensive. Sheep do love to die for no reason whatsoever, so we do everything we can to avoid it happening.
Today we have vaccinated all the lambs with their first dose of ‘Heptavac-P Plus’ which is a vaccine against clostridial diseases and pasteurellosis. I liken it to vaccinating our children when they are young. The sheep get a second dose 4-6 weeks later. Poor things being jabbed!
The …

Payhembury Pot – Free Verse
Here are two free verse poems, one by Jane Wood and another by me. Mine was written after seeing the demise of an oak tree, apparently still in good condition and with little evidence of rot or dead branches.
Fall of a friend
The brown plastic sheath which guarded sapling
Has no use.
Partly broken, it leans back in the hedge and rejoices at
The tree it shielded,
Which, losing its summer coat, views brothers, fields and distant hills
Its older, bigger brother stands alongside - majestic, strong,
Until the bucking, greedy chainsaw …

Churchmouse – June
Dear Friends
What a busy time of the year this is! Mum and Dad are busy sorting out our nests after the winter and we have been told that we have to do the same. It’s not a job Parchina and I like doing. We have got to sort out all the old straw bedding, underneath which we find all sorts of rubbish that we were too lazy to throw away when we should have.
Sometimes though we have found something of interest. I found a tiny chocolate egg left over from the Easter egg hunt, so I was kind and shared it with Parchina. It was a bit dusty but it …

News From Payhembury Provisions – June
It’s summertime and the shopping is easy! We have stocked up on all sorts of summery goods from beach balls, fishing nets and crab lines for a family day at the seaside to everything you need for a barbeque in the garden. We have fresh meats, salads and bread as well as frozen desserts, lollies and ice creams including the locally made Otter Valley ice cream. After a hard day at work what better way to unwind than picking up a chilled bottle of rosé from the shop and enjoying it in the garden in the evening sunshine. And don’t forget we have …
