Alan’s Nature Notes from July
Hi there everyone
Well, the undoubted highlight for me during the last month has been not one, but two red kites flying over our house. Presumably a pair, they stayed around for about five minutes, quartering the area. They have been in the Payhembury area for over a month, because others have seen them. Let’s hope that they stay much longer, and start a family here.
It has been good butterfly weather recently, and I’ve seen red admirals, peacocks, meadow browns, tortoiseshells, gatekeepers, whites and the odd skipper. Also moths have been …

Yellingham Farm in July
This month the Bed and Breakfast business has been booming thank goodness. We have such a diverse range of guests – it is wonderful. Of course it is also great that they support our local shop and of course the local pub and surrounding attractions.
But back to basics … our farm. This month is always a noisy one – well, only for a couple of nights. It is time to wean the lambs. I have just treated myself to a new (second-hand actually) sheep race. In my declining years you need all the help you can get when handling sheep and the race is …

Payhembury Open Gardens for Hospiscare
“On Sunday, 25th June, five gardens in Payhembury, including my own at Rose Cottage, were opened on behalf of Hospiscare, and I would like to thank all those who were involved:
The owners of the other four gardens, Tim Woolgar & Jacqueline Hollister, Victoria Cottage; John Marchant, Colstocks Cottage; Tim & Gina Cox, Moneyglass Cottage; and Toni and Paul Lister, Moorside;
Pat Fowler who organised the refreshments and all her helpers on the day, plus those who baked scones and cakes;
Clive Fowler and Brian Salter who …

A Big Hike for Macmillan
Congratulations to Alison, Becky, & Penny on their amazing £1,000+ hike for charity!
We did it! On a very warm and sunny 8th July, Alison, Becky and Penny hiked 23.6 miles of the Jurassic coastline, past Lulworth Cove, Durdledoor, and finally finishing at Corfe Castle.
So far, we have raised more than £1,000 for Macmillan and we want to thank all the people of Payhembury who helped us. We had a fantastic day and are looking forward to the next challenge - watch this space!

Letter to the PM from Pete Penly
Could we have our inches back now that Brexit’s here
Pounds and ounces too let me make it clear
Centimetres mean nothing to me
I learned Imperial Measures you see
Twelve inches one foot three feet a yard
They taught us that at school it wasn’t very hard
Gallons and pints and don’t forget quarts
Then there are bushels and pecks and allsorts
Ounces make pounds - pounds make stones
Not those you throw - not those in loans
But farthings and guineas, shillings and pence
We …

A Note Via Mouse Media Messenger
Hi P&P
I look forward to your monthly mouse experiences with anticipation. You obviously enjoyed your visit to the seaside.
Did you go to Mousehole (pronounced Mous’l by your Cornish cousins)? If not, perhaps next time. It is a lovely coastal village.
I think you deserve a special treat, so on the first Sunday in August, you will find morsels in a container on the church porch seat - a selection of the finest cheese and cake crumbs for your delectation.
Regards Annoni Mouse

Churchmouse – August
Hello friends, can you see what we mice are up to? Well Mum and Dad thought it would be a good idea if we learned a musical instrument. You see we enjoy the music in church so much they thought it was about time we joined in.
So they managed to find a French horn and a saxophone small enough for us to play. Well it’s been great fun; we haven’t got a teacher yet so we have been playing around on our own. Not too sure what we sound like but it has been terrific to make lots of noise. Grandma and Grandpa mice have been scurrying around with …

Tea and Bingo – August
We had our July meeting in the Function Room at the Six Bells and very nice it was too with the lovely patio area they now have outside. If you haven’t seen it I would recommend a look – while clutching your pint!
We had a few teething problems with the new tickets, but soon settled down and although our numbers were a bit low (anything to do with Andy Murray being on at Wimbledon?) there were enough of us to tackle the cakes.
I think “honours” were even with the winners being nicely spread and even people who couldn’t be there, but still …
