As well as selling well known brands at competitive prices, we also try to respond to your requests to sell fresh, local food that you won't find in supermarkets. We have eggs, bread, cheese, pies, curries, beer, cakes, honey, jam, flowers and vegetables for sale which are produced in Devon, some of them even in Payhembury.
This month as well as our regular weekly supply of meat from K and M butchers in Ottery, who source all their meat from Devon and Somerset, we also have a real treat of beef from Tuck Mill. Many people will know Jon and …

Payhembury Provisions News – September 2017
Alan’s Nature Notes from August
Hi everyone,
A highlight this month has been a kind invitation from Michael Down, at Uggaton Farm, to see two barn owl chicks. Ray and I climbed up the ladder (not at the same time!), and there they were---two white bundles of fluff, but obviously growing quickly. Quite an experience for us both, and many thanks to Michael.
Arriving home late, one cool, rainy night, what do you think met us at our front door? There, sheltering from the elements, curled up in a ball, was large hedgehog. On seeing us, he (she?) slid away behind some flower …

Yellingham Farm in August
Interestingly, the month of August is very quiet for us in farming terms, but around us the big farms are working flat out. When we moved here some 20 years ago, we made all our own hay, with the help of our neighbours to bale it, but bought in our straw. Today, it is more economic for us as we are so small, just 46 acres, to contract out or buy in hay and straw.
It is such a lovely landscape here at Yellingham as we overlook 3 farms, some big, some small, but the good news is, the land is still being farmed. The weather is so up and …

Reknowned Play Comes to Broadhembury
"Shakespeare’s Will" A historical play by Canadian writer Vern Thiessen, touching on the little known life of William Shakespeare's wife, Anne Hathaway.
Performed by Sally Hyde Lomax, the play starts immediately after Will's funeral. Anne has been handed Shakespeare's last will and testament by one of her least favourite people, his sister Joan. She initially ignores the will itself and instead spends an hour reminiscing about her life with, or as it turns out, largely without, Will. After an hour, she finally reads the will and finds some …

Huge Vote of Thanks!
Thank you to Marian Edwards for being part of the team who edit the Parish Paper.
Marian has decided now that it is time to hang up her editing pen, having done the job for several years. Her editions always included fantastic photos and interesting news and she made the Parish Paper look fresh and readable.
Thank you from us all Marian!
PS We would like another editor to join the team. If you are reasonably computer literate and have a little time to spare 3 or 4 times a year, please get in touch to find out more at …

Churchmouse – September
Hello friends,
In our last letter we said that we mice would be looking after the church while you were all away. Well we decided to hold pour own services when it was quiet, you can see us sitting in the pews. It was great fun, Granma and Dad lead the service, Mum did a lovely Bible reading from the Mice Bible, did you know we have one? It was telling us about how Jesus told his disciples off because they wouldn’t let the children come near him. Grandpa mouse sang a solo, not too sure what he sang, it was supposed to be all things bright and …

Tea and Bingo – September
Once again we met in the Function Room in the Six Bells – lots of room for us there.
This month we had two nice surprises, Vivian was calling so Jan was able to do her own cards (doing a lot better than usual I have to say!) and Vivian even brought hubby Edward with her. We haven’t had a gentleman with us for a while and I suspect it brought out the competitive spirit in the ladies!
Marjorie brought some lovely shortbread, which went down without touching the sides, and Sue made her gooey cherry cake – which isn’t that pretty, but tastes …
