Payhembury Bowls – New Members Needed
December Message from Rev Steve Weston
Do you ever get any odd, unwanted or inappropriate Christmas presents ? They often come from relatives who don’t know you very well. My wife’s godmother, whose funeral took place recently, was very diligent in making contact every Christmas and birthday with a present by post to her goddaughter, but what was unwrapped was a bit of a lottery, and often wildly inappropriate. Once I remember being given liqueur chocolates, (not my favourite, and anyway I was only 13 at the time).
The very best Christmas presents in my experience come from those …

Yellingham in October
Yes, my search for a handsome, well bred Black Welsh Mountain ram has been successful. After many phone calls and endless hours on the internet, I managed to find a flock that I liked the look of. The plus side was that it was in the West Country so no long journeys to Wales where some of the best flocks exist – of course. In fact, one of the best rams I saw was in north Wales but the cost of diesel was going to be more than the price of the ram, so that idea got kicked into touch straight away.
We gathered in the two flocks, and went through …

Thank You All!
Thanks for the Harvest Lunch
We all had a delicious lunch following the harvest service on 1st October. May we thank Miles East and team for catering and all those who donated puddings. Also thanks to the heroes who are always there before and after to shift tables and chairs - we could not do this without you.

Alan Jones was still in hospital as our deadline approached for getting the magazine to print, so there’s no Nature Notes this issue. Margaret has asked us to pass on their thanks to …

Volunteer with the Blackdown Hills Trust
The Blackdown Hills Trust is looking for local volunteers to help in the Neroche Forest area. These sites are managed by the Blackdown Hills Trust on behalf of the Forestry Commission: they are a magnet for rare butterflies and an array of plants, insects, birds and mammals. The areas are grazed by English Longhorn cattle in the summer months.
The role will involve walking the stock fence twice a year during the spring and autumn, in the grazing compartments, to check for any rotten posts or damage to the wire, and reporting back to the Trust. …

Marie Curie Helpers
Marie Curie Helper volunteers offer people a friendly ear and the opportunity to talk through any worries. Volunteers also help by providing practical support and information about local services, and by enabling carers and family members to take a short break.
The charity is also looking for volunteer assessors, which entails visiting terminally ill people and/or their carers to identify their needs and determine if the Marie Curie Helper service would be appropriate for them.
Jessica, a Devon Helper, said: “When I was matched with my …

Broadhembur WI – November
Under the title of Allergy and Anaphylaxis, we had a brain-testing time last meeting, and all the better for that! We learnt some serious physiology from Richard Brown, Advanced Practitioner in Immunology, and how the allergic disease process involves the immune system, and can lead to airway blocking, hypotension, shock and possibly, death. This is Anaphylaxis. This takes from a few minutes to two hours, no longer than that.
The allergic process affects first the B cells in the blood, then the plasma cells (1gE), then the mast cell-- where …

FOPs Update – 3 November
Firstly a big thank you to everyone who come along to the Kids Cafe on the last day before half term. Oak class parents provided a lovely range of cakes which sold brilliantly.
The game created by Alice and Gemma Millett seemed to go down well and William Brainch was the lucky winner of a jar of Smarties. Well done William and thank you to the Millets for creating the game.
FOPS have a meeting on:
Monday 6th November
3.30pm in the Village Hall
to plan for the rest of this term. Please come along, children welcome. …

Rev Cate Edmonds – Farewell
The day has sadly arrived now
That Cate Edmonds will retire
Off come her shoes, slippers go on,
And a chair gets pulled up by the fire.
You must be joking, that’s not like Cate
She still has a lot to do
Caring for all those who need her,
People like me and you.
While all of us in this congregation,
Who have known Cate for many years
Accept her leaving with resignation
We can’t help shedding some tears.
So what will our Cate do now?
One really cannot tell
But she won’t sit in front of the fire
That we all know very …
