September is such a positive, exciting month for us here at Yellingham. The weather continues to be good – hence the B and B is still thriving, but importantly for us it is the start of a new sheep year. This year’s lambs are not fattening as quick as we would like due to the continuing lack of rain and hence grass growth – hard feed and hay are still very much on the menu for them all. But for the ewes and rams, it is a time of selection, culling and the purchase of new rams. For some sheep farmers, this task is well underway or even done and …

Paul’s Nature Notes from September
The July storm drove some large moths to seek shelter indoors. Charlotte from Lower Tale reported a Magpie moth, beautifully patterned black, white and yellow, and we had a glorious Red Underwing, one of the largest moths you can see. I understand that some people do not like moths, believing them to be guilty of making holes in clothes. Actually there are only four species that do this, all very small moths indeed.
We lost all our plums. The wasps took the greengages. As for the Victoria plums, one night they were there, the next morning only …

Payhembury Provisions News – October
After a summer of salads it only takes a nip in the air or a chilly evening to set us thinking about hot roast dinners, casseroles and stews, so in the middle of this month we will be getting more Tuck Mill beef to sell in the shop. This is traditional tasty Red Ruby beef, which is reared and grass fed by Jon and Libby Carden just a couple of miles from the shop; local food at its best. We will have various joints for roasting, as well as stewing and braising steak, mince and of course the hugely popular steaks.
You may think we are going …

October Message from Reverend David
This month marks ten years since the most damaging Feniton floods in recent years. Memories for many remain painful. The risk of repeated trauma still exists; floods are a present threat as well as a past reality. Progress with alleviation schemes is frustratingly slow. In the meantime there is much gratitude for the invaluable work of flood-wardens and local councillors.
Some reading this won’t have been affected personally, or you may live in another village. But a community’s feelings are shared. Most will have experienced different traumas …

Paul’s Nature Notes from August
Amelia & Dan were thrilled to see their first ever Hummingbird Hawk-moth along the lane, a moment that will stay with them both for a long time. I still remember my first sighting on a Greek island. They are such awesome insects.
Did you hear about the eviction of the house martins? Last year a pair built a nest right at the end of the season, only to be evicted by our local thuggish house sparrows, which did not want to lay eggs, merely preferring it as a singing perch. This spring the martins returned and repaired the nest, only to be …

Yellingham Farm in August
The farm is quiet except for the quad bike working during August which it rarely does – delivering hay to all the sheep as the grass is still suffering from the beautiful weather. Hey Ho (dreadful pun), it could be worse, at least the B and B is still very busy as the world visits and enjoys the West country.
One such person is a very close friend from Surrey who I used to play hockey with, who, after years of no contact has re-emerged in my life – it’s like it was yesterday when we last spoke – a sign of a solid friendship.
Well I have …

September Message from Rev David
Alongside being the vicar, I work three-days-a-week training non-ordained people in church ministry in Devon (with SWMTC, South West Ministry Training Course). During interviews in June for a training course in the autumn, I asked each applicant how the course would fit in with their lives. One candidate’s reply was, ‘I couldn’t have done it if it had been over the summer. But starting in September works well.’ He went on to explain that he works in farming.
This brought home afresh to me that the yearly cycle used by our schools and places of …

Payhembury Provisions News – September
Would you like some money for your village group or organisation? If so we need to hear from you before September 12th. Every year we are required to have a members meeting when we can update everyone with information about how the shop has been faring over the last year and also elect committee members as necessary. It is a time for you to ask questions and make suggestions about what you would like to be able to buy in the shop and generally improve the whole shopping experience for us all. One of the best parts of the evening is when we …
