Under the title of Allergy and Anaphylaxis, we had a brain-testing time last meeting, and all the better for that! We learnt some serious physiology from Richard Brown, Advanced Practitioner in Immunology, and how the allergic disease process involves the immune system, and can lead to airway blocking, hypotension, shock and possibly, death. This is Anaphylaxis. This takes from a few minutes to two hours, no longer than that.
The allergic process affects first the B cells in the blood, then the plasma cells (1gE), then the mast cell– where after the initial allergic reaction, degranulation occurs, then histamine and cytokines production, and finally symptoms. I think that’s right!!!
The 1gE antibody used to be useful in fighting worms and so on, but now we’re so clean, it has nothing to do. But cause trouble. Memo…..good idea to let children play in the garden, and get dirty!! Food intolerances only involve the gut, which leads to what we all know of the ills that flesh is heir to. Uncomfortable, but not disastrous.
This brainwork was followed by restoration of the body, with delicious refreshments made and served to all fifty local WI members…a great achievement by our magnificent band of workers!
