Avid readers of the parish mag will have noticed that we didn’t have a piece in last month’s edition, for which I can only apologise. Due to the poor weather and various opposition crying off we reached the end of June having played only seven games, of which, we won………..er………… um………none (although we did manage a tie on one occasion!) So nothing to shout about really.
However July has seen a much needed upturn in our fortunes in many ways. Firstly, Umpire John Somers has returned to fitness and is able to stand once more for us, lovely to have you back John.
Secondly, ought to have a drum roll really, EDDC have granted us planning permission to play cricket AND keep sheep in the field, so we are no longer illegal cricketers. Some of you might have been confused by the fact that we held an alcohol licence for three years, to serve the aforementioned beverages from a building that “didn’t exist”. Different departments see? Planning and Alcohol Licensing clearly don’t talk very often!
Thirdly, we’ve won some games against:
-
Plymtree , thanks to an unplayable bowling spell from the Burnley Panther, Steve Clegg (3-14) and runs from Mark Hammett (25 Not) and Tony Quick (21)
-
Sunsets CC with runs from George Southall Brown, Jason Wood, Ralph Cook
-
Erratics CC with runs from Jason Wood, Kittow the Younger and Steve Post and two wickets apiece for Neil Chambers, The Panther and Kittow the Younger.
This was followed up by a defeat on club Open Day to our nearest rivals the Lions of Broadhembury, who annually go from not having 11 players one minute to finding 11 pros the next, cheeky blighters. We now have a new club member in Kittow the youngest, who tends to turn up barefoot looking like he’s just moored his Swallows and Amazons boat on the Tale and demand that the nearest person plays ball with him …………. followed by his poor old father hobbling along behind with his leg in a brace. As you’d expect of a Kittow, he seems to know where the bar is when a thirst takes him.
Completely non cricket related but it warrants mention here, I think. Our very own bar lady, Jane Wood (Hugen – Tobler) has been slaving away over her book “Love, Life and Lemons” for seven years. It is now available on Amazon and I’ve reached page 127. It’s a very enjoyable read and I would thoroughly recommend it as a great holiday book over the summer.
Finally congratulations to England on securing a first World Cup win in 27 years, what a nerve jangling evening it was!
Anyway, onto the next, see you on the legal pitch
