Payhembury Spring Bulb and Flower Show – Report

3 April 2017 By Sue

miscI’m sure you’ll all agree that the 54th Bulb Show was a resounding success. The hall looked and smelt fantastic and it’s obvious that Payhembury is full of talented, clever, creative people.

Now brace yourselves for lots of thank yous! Firstly, I want to thank the wonderful committee:

Di, Louise, Roz, Hazel, Penny and Becky – you are all amazing.bs3

I would also like to thank Jan, Joan, Julie, Carol, Ruby and Maggie for helping on the day and Sarah, the Bishop of Crediton for opening the show. Many thanks also to Sue and Mo for raffle prizes, to Joy Morgan for donating the children’s book tokens and to Joan, Clare and Leah for being stewards.

The cup winners were:

  • Dinah Pratt for most points in show; most outstanding exhibit in classes 1-9; most points in the preserves; most points in the handicrafts and most points in sections B, D and E

  • bs2Hazel Pike for most points in the flower arranging and for the most outstanding flower arrangement

  • Di Somers for most points in the cookery section

  • Emma Hewerdine for her outstanding entry in the handicrafts

  • Amelia Wadsworth won the salver for most points in the children’s section

  • Max Millet won the runner-up cup

The winners of the children’s classes were:

  • Abbey Stonex (Oak Class)

  • Max Millet (Ash Class)

  • Angus Forsythe (Willow Class)

  • Henry Buxton (Foundation Unit)

  • Lucy Weekes for her basket of eggs

  • Freddie Cann for his Lego model

  • Harry Bentley for his vegetable model

  • Amelia Wadsworth for her Mothering Sunday cardbs1

  • Sam Bentley for his face on a slice of bread

  • Ellie Mullin for her choc chip muffins

Well done and congratulations to you all.

When I took over as chair of the show a few years ago, there was a question bs4mark over how important it still was as a village event now that times have changed and people have such busy lives. What Saturday showed me is that it is still very much relevant and people do want to come and compete against each other and enjoy a community event. This is clear when the hall was brimming with exhibits and we had more than 100 extra entries than last year.

So thank you to all of you who entered and made it such a great day and to those who came to see all the entries.

If anyone has any ideas for next year feel free to email me: j.wood873@btinternet.com

See you next year, Jane Wood
