When I moved to Devon I asked a joiner when he could replace a window on our house and he said May. May came and went and as the following May loomed I asked if now was the May he was thinking of. “Oh I didn’t say May” he replied with a cheeky grin “I said may-be”. The window got changed that May.
So here in Payhembury we have moved into the early summer and there is change about. Graham Smith, our stalwart IT man has moved away and Richard McCarthy has stepped into his boots, for which we thank him. Rich and Nan have also moved away and left …

Payhembury Provisions News – April 2022
April is here, with longer days, lighter evenings and warmer spring sunshine. Springtime in Payhembury is particularly beautiful with glorious displays of daffodils and primroses in gardens and hedgerows, soon to be followed with bluebells, cow parsley and hedges full of blossom producing a riot of colour to cheer us all. In Payhembury Provisions we are embracing Springtime too with colourful tulips, delicious hot cross buns and special Easter treats available in the shop. In the chiller you will find this season’s rhubarb – pink and delicious. …

Payhembury Provisions News – March 2022
We are really thrilled to be able to share with you the excellent news that we are now the very proud owners of the shop on a 299 year lease, securing the future of Payhembury Provisions for the village. It has taken a long time, many meetings, and a lot of hard work, and we have David and Tim from our committee, and Robert Leach to thank for ensuring our thriving shop will be able to continue serving the village for many years. It is very exciting.
‘Spring has sprung’ at Payhembury Provisions - the daffodils are here once again! You can find …

Payhembury Provisions News – February 2022
Hello – It’s my turn to be ‘passed the pen’ for Payhembury Provisions. Thank you to Tim for covering December and January so brilliantly.
I am really pleased to report that David is continuing to make steady progress after his accident before Christmas and has already been up to the shop on a few occasions. We do miss him terribly and send our love and best wishes to him and Mo.
Congratulations to Louise Scott and Biddy Hall our two prize winners from the shop Christmas Draw and a huge thank you to Roz for organising it yet again.
If you are …

Payhembury Provisions News – January 2022
As some of you will know David, our chairman, took a tumble before Christmas in the line of duty - plugging in some Christmas lights above the chiller - and gave his head a whack, enough to put him in hospital for a week or so. He’s okay, but I’m sure you will all join me in wishing him a speedy full recovery (post Christmas update he’s home and recovering well).
The shop has functioned without him at there helm but only because we are entirely volunteer run and therefore there are systems in place to cover holidays and accidents such as this. …

Payhembury Provisions News – December 2021
Hello. I have been passed the pen of Payhembury Provisions by Mary our long standing ‘field correspondent’ and firstly I must thank her for all her words over the last few years and hope that myself and the other new journos (we are taking it in turns) live up to her Pulitzer Prize winning standards to tell you what is happening here in the shop.
Talking of Pullets (see what I did there?) as this goes to press we are a mere five and a bit weeks to Christmas and that means we are only four weeks away from the fresh free range bronze and barn …

Payhembury Provisions News – November 2021
This month it’s time to start talking turkey! You’ve probably read in the press that turkeys are likely to be in short supply in supermarkets this year due to the lack of skilled workers arriving from Europe to process them. Well we are delighted to say that when our previous source told us he wasn’t able to supply us any longer our resourceful Turkey Team went to visit Rosamondford Farm in Perkins Village near Aylesbeare. They rear their day old chicks on the farm feeding them local wheat and vegetables with no additives and the bronze turkeys …

Payhembury Provisions News – October 2021
We know you're always up for a new product in the shop and so we've added to our repertoire of weekend baking with Portuguese Pasteis de Nata. These are crisp flaky pastry tarts filled with creamy egg custard and a slightly caramelised finish and are absolutely delicious. They are baked at a very high temperature so the only problem is resisting taking the first bite until they have really cooled down! We are still baking our old favourites of buttery croissants, pains au chocolat and pains aux raisins to make your weekend breakfasts rather …

Payhembury Provisions – September 2021
During the Covid restrictions we really missed our annual volunteers’ suppers which are always fun and a great way to thank all the wonderful people who keep the shop going in many different ways over the year. Last month we held our 10th anniversary tea party and it was lovely to see so many old friends, volunteers and customers who were able to get together for a good chat over a cup of tea and delicious scones and cakes made by Ed and Janet. David, the Chairman of the shop committee, made a short speech including the fact that over the last …
