Payhembury Sailing and Boating Group

Sail & Sky

2015 (March):

Anyone interested in the below – please contact Kevin Wooff (Dawn Cottage) if you are interested in doing some social boating in any capacity. We will be having a get together during the Easter hols to talk over options for the warmer weather later in the year. At this stage just drop your email/phone to me and I’ll put you on the distribution list.

A new activity/social group is in the early stages of formation with its basis being messing about on the water in its many forms.  This will develop around activities proposed by anyone who has an interest in this area, including the youth of the village (and surrounding villages if there is interest) with the possible future outcomes in mind:

  • sailing/boating outings, for example:

    • dinghy sailing to our nearest lake

    • kayaking/boating sailing outings or expeds anywhere on our marvellous Devon & Cornwall coastline, or maybe rivers (eg,the Wye)

    • for the more adventurous, sailing outings/charters from Devon to France and/or the Channel Islands (or beyond… it’s a big world)

  • pooling information, for example on RYA qualifications and courses, useful websites

  • sharing resource to make the activities accessible to people that don’t have them, eg, boats, gear, liftshare opportunities etc

  • affiliations with local sailing clubs to access boats and events

  • seeking ‘group’ discounts from watersports shops, training centres, clubs and/or boat charter centres

  • exploring demand for future shared boat or equipment ownership, or shared building/renovation projects – this might include people who want to get involved with, or develop, craft skills

  • seeing if we can persuade inspirational people to come to the village to talk about their sailing/boating experiences

Of course whether any of the above happens will depend on the level of interest, although there is already a small group that has shown interest in some or all of the above, and there is already a good deal of activity going on as individuals or small groups from the village in kayaking and sailing.
