Alan’s Nature Notes – Observations from January
A Happy New Year to all my readers!
The exciting news this month is the fact that we have some new animals in the area. On the River Tale, there are two beavers, who have been around for a while, so it looks as though they like it here, and will stay. I haven't seen them myself, but I understand that The Devon Wildlife Trust people are involved, as are the landowners. Beavers have been living on the Otter for some years, so it was only a matter of time that some would move to the tributaries.
The other day, I saw lots of fieldfares and some …

Yellingham Farm in January
The start of the New Year at Yellingham is always a little bit of a tense time, as we have our annual routine TB test on our cattle. This test is compulsory and is funded by the Government. Our test is always in January and carried out by our local vets. In brief, each animal has two injections, approximately 12cms apart. First the vet will clip 2 small areas where the injection will be made and then measure the thickness of the skin before administering the injection. Avian tuberculin is injected in the top site and bovine tuberculin below. On …

February Message From Reverend Leisa
Ash Wednesday... Love Lent, Love one another!
As we fast track to February, with the red and green of Christmas now fading into another memory, we enter the repentant and reflective season of Lent – and the celebrations of St. Valentine's Day. A saint steeped in legend and mystery, but one who points us to a time of year that is full to the brim of chocolate hearts, flowers and romance.
This year Ash Wednesday and Valentine’s Day land together, on the same day. Valentine’s Day can offer a great opportunity to encourage the affirming of …

Payhembury Provisions Joins Devon Link Up “Safe Places” Scheme
Payhembury Provisions has agreed to be part of the Devon Link Up 'Safe Places' scheme which provides vulnerable adults with a safety net of help and support when they are out in the community by themselves.
Any vulnerable adult who is worried or needs help can therefore go to the shop as a 'Safe Place' and someone will help them. Our shop is registered with the scheme, which is based at the Beehive in Honiton, and will display a sticker on the window to show that it is part of the 'Safe Places' scheme.
Each of these vulnerable adults carries …
