Payhembury Provisions News – July
Bring out the cake, candles and party poppers (we sell them all!), our birthday is in July and we're going to be eight years old. We've made some changes over the years; when we started we had a part-time paid manager but now we are completely "do-it-yourself" except for professional help to oversee the book-keeping each month.
We have tried to respond to what you, our customers, have told us you would like to be able to buy; more local produce, more fresh fruit and veg and a great range of competitively priced wine. We hope that when you …

Rev David’s July Message
A whirlwind passed through our house last week. A delightful one, the energy and buzz of six of our son’s friends, enjoying that idyllic time after exams, their final university exams no less. The household was lifted for a few days by this wave of young adult joy – East Devon eagerly explored, Feniton Spar getting good business – before reverting to its more sedate middle-aged character.
Beginnings and endings. July begins for our family with Matthew’s graduation. A final trip North to Durham; the last scenic drive home over the Pennines on …

Paul’s Nature Notes for May/June
The sight of a Beautiful Demoiselle on the new path whilst out enjoying the monthly walk with the PGWC in May made me think that dragonflies would make an excellent topic to write about.
Despite all the water we have around us, there have only been four species of dragonflies recorded in the garden: Beautiful Demoiselle, Azure Damselfly, Golden-ringed Dragonfly and Southern Hawker, although I am half expecting a Banded Demoiselle to show up. Of all the insects, dragonflies are truly spectacular and arguably the demoiselles are the most …

Payhembury Provisions News – June
Ed East's Lamb Dauphinoise and a trio of luscious desserts were on the menu for our annual Volunteers Supper this year and were much enjoyed by everyone. The supper is our opportunity to get together with all our volunteers who work so hard during the year to ensure the success of the shop. We had over 40 sitting down to supper this time and when we counted up later, and included those who sadly weren't able to be there on the evening, we realised we now have 50 volunteers. Anne, our volunteer coordinator, would kill me if I didn't mention at …

Paul’s Nature Notes for April/May
In early April our Long-tailed Tits had fledged and were being introduced to the feeders. By the end of the month chiffchaffs had arrived in force and swallows were making an appearance. Blackbirds, however, were not so lucky, as four hatchlings only lasted two days before perishing. Two of them were neatly laid out on the bridge over the stream. As we go to print swifts have returned – summer is on the way!
It has been a good year for the Dark-edged Bee-flies. The proboscis is truly awesome, although there is nothing to fear. With the warmer …

Payhembury Provisions News – May
We are sad that Leonard Salter, one of our most loyal and loved customers, has died. He was a true gentleman who came into the shop nearly every day wearing his battered old hat, and with a twinkle in his eye he would raise a smile from everyone. His knowledge and love of Payhembury and the surrounding countryside was unparalleled and he was always generous in sharing this knowledge with anyone who asked. We miss him.
Are we heading towards a cashless society? When the shop was opened 8 years ago who would have thought that our cash …

Paul’s Nature Notes from March/April
This can be such a lovely time of the year and one sight we really look forward to is our Japanese Cherry tree bursting into blossom. It is such an ephemeral moment, as it really only looks at its best for about two weeks, but what a period of pure enjoyment it brings us. It also means only one thing – spring has arrived!
By the middle of March Brian in Colestocks was reporting robins, great and blue tits nest building and a dunnock laying eggs, plus plenty of activity around the bird feeders. When driving two neighbours to Feniton to catch …
