Hello again
Returning home at dusk the other evening, a large dark shape flew silently overhead – a tawny owl – the first I’ve seen this year. I haven’t heard many owls either, which is unusual. Biddy tells me that they have a family of little owls in Colestocks. These are not much bigger than thrushes.
Late in June, there was a lot of activity on our feeders – lots of young birds – finches, tits, sparrows, collared doves plus a great spotted woodpecker, which was always around. Then, I discovered that there were two of them, a pair? We’ve …

Hello nature lovers!
I saw a rather gruesome sight the other morning –drawing the bedroom curtains back first thing, I noticed a jackdaw pecking furiously into the bank, at the top of our garden– then he pulled out a big slow worm, about a foot long (half an inch thick!), and proceeded to eat it bit by bit– nature in the raw again!
Another bird up to no good in the garden – a jay. I'm afraid this means he's after the young nestlings, which is typical of members of the crow family, which the jay is, of course. However, the jay is a …

Churchmouse – July
Dear Friends, what did I say in my last letter? “Don’t tell the cats!” Well what a surprise we had, last Sunday, just before the service we mice were doing our usual jog around the church when, bang, we bumped into a new addition, a small CAT! What a shock, there sitting on Rev Cate’s chair a cheeky little cat. We stopped in our tracks, very still. She looked at us, we looked at her. What could we do? Run away; but she would no doubt chase after us? Parchina started to cry. I was very brave (not really I was shaking in my trainers).
