You may be interested to know that Caius (Cai) Nicholas, a member of Tale Valley Community Theatre and who played the lead role in They Dream of Home last September (pic attached) has, in the face of great national competition – around 5,000 people are auditioned each year, been accepted into the National Youth Theatre. He will work in London this summer and take part in a performance at the end of the summer-school.
Well done Cai!

A Success For Caius
Alan’s Nature Notes from April
Hello everyone
Well, the weather has warmed up recently, hasn’t it? It has brought the butterflies out on the wing! I have seen tortoiseshells, red admirals and the highlight - a lovely yellow brimstone - a sure sign of Spring.
Margaret and I visited my brother in Bromsgrove last week. Ian and I went for a walk round Upton Warren, which is one of Worcestershire Wildlife Trust’s reserves. Sounds of Spring were to be heard everywhere, particularly the chiffchaffs. Their two-note calls (“chiff-chaff”) resonated throughout the woodland. These …

Yellingham Farm – April
Lambing is now over and I cannot moan, because it was a good year apart from the odd problem, which is to be expected.
I have to say a huge thank you to Charlotte Porteous who has been a great assistant throughout lambing. She came before College and in the afternoons and just got on with whatever needed doing – a good Shepherd in the making. A keen youngster who listens and learns is a real asset – thanks Charlotte – same time next year ??
It is late at night as I write this and I have just been to a Devon Farms Accommodation meeting of …

Our Village – Payhembury, a Poem
Our Village
In our village there’s lots to do
And taking part is up to you
There are choirs that sing
Bell-ringers who ring
Indoor bowls, on a short mat
I must admit, I’m partial to that
Pilates is good it keeps you trim
Classes for her, classes for him
Soup at St. Mary’s, a quiz at the pub
But no boy scouts, not even a cub
Applepips and babes are there in the hall
Bingo and biscuits, who’s gonna call
Coffee for mornings, a girls night out
Catch all the gossip from round and about
And helping out at Payhembury Provisions
Could …

Payhembury Poetry Pot – Acrostic Poems
Thank you to everyone who sent it their ingenious acrostic poem. Sue’s verse is particularly apposite given our approaching vote and Julie, as I notice buds bursting, heralds the approaching Spring. You still have time to squeeze in a blank verse poem before the (slightly extended) deadline of 6th May. Please see last April’s paper for details or email me (j.w.somers@exeter.ac.uk). If you have not had a go yet, please consider writing one this time. No new theme this month as we will take a poetry break over the summer. Thanks to Sue …

News From Payhembury Provisions – May
This month we are excited to say we have not just one but TWO new suppliers of bread (we never do things by halves at Payhembury Provisions!):
Our first new baker is the Crusty Cob, a long standing local family business with several shops in this area. On six days a week they will be delivering to us from their range of loaves, rolls and sweet and savoury treats. We can’t wait to work our way through their extensive product range but if you have a particular favourite it would help us if you let us know. Of course our prices will be the same …

Churchmouse – May
Look what I found ...
A picture of Mum pushing me in a pram when I was a baby! Don’t I look sweet? Mum looks so proud of me too. I hope she is still proud of me and Parchina now that we’ve grown up. I know sometimes we do things which annoy her, like not coming back from the fields on time. She worries what might have happened to us, particularly when there is a large fearsome cat prowling around. I wonder why cats always want to chase us mice. I’d like to get to know a few but then they might just gobble me up and I’m sure that wouldn’t be …

Yellingham Farm Diary – March
Lambing is in full swing and apart from a couple of problems we have already turned out some beautiful lambs in glorious spring sunshine. Not too many singles or triplets which is good and plenty of healthy twins.
Unfortunately, we had a problem with a greedy ewe and it wasn’t hunger! It was late at night and I went down to the barn to check on the ewes and one had lambed and was cleaning up 2 beautiful black welsh lambs. They were both suckling away happily.
All looked fine. She then went down and started lambing again and seemed in …

Alan’s Nature Notes from March
Hello there
Spring is nearly here! The weather this week has been lovely---sunny and blue skies. Two butterflies in the garden yesterday, a tortoiseshell and a small white. Lots of birds too, including "our" woodpecker, tits and finches.
On a walk down to Blue Anchor, a tractor was ploughing the field opposite Yarrow Park. It was obviously disturbing the worms, etc., because there were hundreds of birds about, including at least ten buzzards feeding onthe ground, plus others in the air. Also, many gulls and crows.
At Tuck Mill, I was excited …
