We know Spring is on the way when the buckets of daffodils appear for sale outside the shop. They are grown for us by Fentongollan Farm on the Fal estuary in Cornwall and are picked, packed, and in Payhembury all within a matter of hours. We'll have a selection of different varieties as they come into flower over the coming weeks.
The latest new product in our chiller this month is fresh milk from the Oak Park Dairy in Clyst Hydon. The Mitchem family, who have been running Oak Park for four generations, set up a new enterprise on their farm …

Paul’s Nature Notes – December 2019/January 2020
Last spring I mentioned that a pair of Nuthatches had turned up at the garden feeders. These were the first we had seen since we moved into the village just over three years before. Now reports are coming in of regular sightings of these lovely birds: Brian has told me he sees them most days on his feeders in Markers Park, Mary in Luton has also been enjoying the sight of them on hers, and they are also being seen on the feeders in Brian’s garden in Colestocks. I suspect that the pair we saw last year may have had a good breeding season and it …

Update on Proposed 6-week Road Closure in Colestocks
The proposed closure of the road through Colestocks (from near the end of the Payhembury-Colestocks footpath, through the centre of Colestocks and down to Shoots Barn) is still being discussed by all of the relevant parties. The aim is to find a solution that enables the property to be attached to the National Grid whilst minimising the disruption to road users. A number of options are being revisited to see if they can be made to work and the time it is taking to find the best viable option is an indication of how complicated this issue …

Paul’s Nature Notes – November/December
What a truly dreadful autumn it has been. I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of days when it has not rained. This has reminded me when
we travelled around New Zealand almost twenty years ago and in particular Doubtful Sound, which can suffer between ten and twenty feet of rainfall a year. We were blessed the day we visited, which was fine and clear. Of the few souvenirs we brought back with us was this poem:
It rained and rained and rained
The average fall was well maintained
And when the tracks were simply bogs
It …

Payhembury Provisions News – January 2020
First of all, thank you to everyone who signed up to support the shop in the Best Village Shop awards run by the Countryside Alliance. Whether we make it to the shortlist or not, (we hope we do!) it has been very heartening to know that so many people appreciate our village shop, thank you!
It's always good to see new products on our shelves, particularly local ones, and this month we are very pleased to be stocking a range of face and skin creams and herbal teas. These have been developed by Halina who is not only a volunteer in the shop but …

Yellingham Farm – December
Yellingham Farm With the rest of the world going crazy at the moment preparing for Christmas, life on the farm is actually quiet and serene. The rams have done their job and are back resting until next autumn, this year’s lambs are growing on nicely as are the cattle.
The constant rain has put a lot of pressure on the fields, with the river Tale rising and falling daily. Fortunately, we are not overstocked and all of our stock including the cattle are still out. With the warm, damp weather, pneumonia is always a threat so we try not to house …
